Preparing for Natural Childbirth

I was recently asked what I did to prepare for natural childbirth.  I though this was an excellent question to share among moms with a labor and delivery in their future!

-I took a walk nearly every day. With my first pregnancy I walked the dog and with my second pregnancy I pushed a stroller. I aimed for 3 or more miles a day!

-I took a prenatal vitamin with DHA.

-I spent time at the pool.  The weightlessness allowed me to exercise longer and in ways I wouldn’t have felt comfortable on dry land!

-I took prenatal yoga classes.

-I read others’ birth stories!  I tried my best to stick to positive ones. Most of Ina May Gaskin’s books have great birth stories. (I also worked as a labor and delivery nurse during both of my pregnancies and loved being surrounded by birth!)

-Read Birthing from Within and The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth.

-I listened to the HypnoBirthing affirmations.

-I drank red raspberry leaf tea regularly and at 37 weeks I started taking evening primrose oil orally.

-I adjusted my posture to avoid a posteriorly tilted pelvis and did my best to ensure my baby was in a good position for delivery.  I love the Spinning Babies website!

-I chose to be under the care of medical providers who were as passionate about natural childbirth as I was and supported my autonomy in making good decisions for me and my baby.

-I had an EXCELLENT doula scheduled to be with us during labor and birth.
